GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE KONYA ECONOMY
In our day, the Konya industry, manufacturing in many sectors, has added the identity of “industrial city” to Konya’s historical “granary” identity. Exporting to 130 countries, Konya is among the leading cities in our country, in many areas from industry to agriculture, from transportation to tourism.
Organized industrial zones have begun to be established in our country in the 1960’s. The 1st Organized Industrial Zone in our province has been established in 1967, the 2nd Organized Industrial Zone in 1976, while finally the 3rd Organized Industrial Zone has been established in 1995. As of May 1st, 2006, the 2nd and 3rd Organized Industrial Zones have been merged as the Konya Organized Industrial Zone (Konya Organize Sanayi Bölgesi - KOS). Meanwhile, according to the last stage reached in the activities for the 4th Organized Industrial Zone, zoning and parcelation activities have been completed and have been approved by the Provincial Special Administration. The title deed for the 4th OIZ area has been issued by the Title Deed Registry Directorate, and project activities on infrastructure are in progress.
The Konya industry, due to its nature, houses sectors that operate in many different areas concurrently, different from the industries of the other provinces of the country. As can be observed in the following table, among the developed sectors in Konya, automotive sub-industry and machinery industry are leading. Agricultural tools and machinery manufacturing industry, casting industry, plastic paint and chemical industry, construction materials industry, paper and packing industry, food and shoes industry are the other advanced sectors in our province.
According to the October 2011 data, total 985 companies are operating at our Organized Industrial Zones, with 157 of these being in the 1st OIZ and 466 in the Büsan Industry.
